We’re Calling on the Spa Industry to Help Plant 1 Million Trees
Will you join us to take URGENT action to reverse the effects of climate change?

“Healthy and growing forests remain the best technology for removing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.” – WeForest
Green Spa Network’s inaugural Action Initiative is premised on the critical and urgent need to regenerate the earth using trees’ natural abilities to reverse climate change. The GSN Tree Planting Initiative is an effort to mobilize the GSN community to plant 1 million trees by Earth Day 2019. Visit the Why Plant Trees tab above to learn more the cause.
Ways to Get Involved
However you choose to contribute, signing up with GSN allows the community to track its overall progress toward our one million-tree goal, rally around a common cause, and send a clear message that the spa and wellness industry cares to be a recognized champion of environmentalism. Existing and new members of the GSN network are encouraged to pledge to contribute to this effort in any of several ways.
- Donate trees through the GSN/WeForest partnership. $3 plants 1 tree. In the Resources tab above, we’ve provided a number of marketing materials for your use, along with ideas for strategies that help to engage customers and highlight your business as an environmental leader.
- Organize or participate in a local tree planting or fundraising event. Activate your local network to organize a tree planting event that involves your staff, customers, and supporters. If you’re unable to plant trees on your property, try partnering with a local nonprofit, charity, school, or government organization that is participating in a similar event to educate about the importance of living trees and forests. For more ideas and information about hosting tree planting events within your community, visit the Resources tab above.
- Continue an existing tree planting partnership. We recognize and applaud the great tree planting efforts and milestones that many businesses in our community have already achieved through other partnerships. By joining the GSN Tree Planting Initiative, each of your planted trees between now and next Earth Day will count towards our collective goal.

“While reducing carbon emissions is critical, research suggests that even if carbon dioxide emissions came to a sudden halt, the carbon dioxide already in the Earth’s atmosphere could continue to warm our planet for hundreds of years. Therefore, the challenge is to reduce future carbon emissions and actively remove the excess carbon from our atmosphere.” – WeForest
Sustainability is vital, but alone it’s not enough.
Unfortunately, resources have been exploited to such an extent that it’s now imperative that we regenerate the earth by not only stopping climate change with sustainability measures, but actively reversing it to keep the planet healthy and habitable for all life.
Regenerating the forests is critical to saving the planet.
Through rampant deforestation and destruction of half of the earth’s topsoil we have destroyed much of the planet’s ability to capture CO2. (WeForest) As a result, the greenhouse gas normally held in trees and the soil goes, instead, into the atmosphere along with the excess we already produce. *Our initiative focuses on systematically planting new trees to specifically reverse these effects.
We have only 12 years to plant 175 billion trees.
“Limiting global warming to +2°C would require the planting of 175 billion trees or the reforestation of 41% of the size of Brazil by 2030, which translates to only 24 trees per person.” – WeForest
With the help of our GSN community, we believe this tree planting goal is possible. Join us today!
WeForest’s Brazil Project
Focusing on Ecological Development and Livelihood Development
GSN’s Tree Planting Initiative will contribute specifically to WeForest’s Brazil project to support the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Restoring the forest is extremely vital to safeguard the remaining biodiversity and combat the progressive loss of the world’s species and for our climate as well. The high carbon sequestration potential of second-growth forests in the Latin American tropics means the Atlantic Forest is a key player in the climate change agenda. This project aims to create forest corridors between remaining fragments, increasing tree cover and habitat connectivity for native species. The community-based nurseries, seed collection, and planting activities are under the management of local people who, thanks to this project, are empowered to earn a living while restoring the forest.
Brazil’s Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlantica) is one of the world’s five most important biodiversity hotspots. Once stretching 130 million hectares across Brazil’s southeastern coast, the Atlantic Forest has been reduced to small isolated fragments, with some patches no larger than 50 hectares. In Pontal de Paranapanema, where the project is based, the extent of deforestation has left a mere 3% of the forest standing. Despite this extreme level of deforestation, the Atlantic Forest still harbors a wealth of biodiversity and has a large potential for carbon sequestration. Read more in the project’s latest report.

Where do we send our WeForest tree donations?
On a monthly basis, or when you are ready to submit your tree donations, please use our donation form (to be available soon!). Additionally, you have an option to have WeForest invoice you directly. Please email our Community Manager, Megan, for more details. More information regarding donations and payment are coming soon!
If my business already is partnered with another tree planting organization (other than WeForest), can I still sign up for the initiative? How do I send my tree counts?
Absolutely! We want acknowledge and applaud any and all efforts that are being done to restore the planet. We’d like to include your tree planting numbers in the initiative’s tree planting goal, so be sure to continue to sign up the Tree Planting Initiative here so we can count your efforts in our totals! On a monthly basis, we will send a reminder email to update your tree donation totals. The GSN Tree Planting Initiative tree counter will reflect the new numbers as we track progress toward our one million-tree planting goal.
