Sustainability is vital, but alone it is not enough. The earth needs us more than ever before! World Environment Day is an environmental awareness day, run by the United Nations held annually on June 5th. On this day we are given the opportunity to reflect and act on ways we can improve the planet. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the environment and specific environmental issues. The holiday is sometimes also called Eco Day or Environment Day.
Established in 1972, World Environment Day (WED) was first held in 1974, which shows that concern about the environment goes back several decades at least. Over 100 countries take part in WED, and the day focuses on environmental concerns ranging from pollution to global warming and sustainable food production to protection of wildlife.
In 2019, China will host the global World Environment Day celebrations on the theme, ‘Air Pollution.’ Find out how you can combat one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time. Register your community clean up, school activity or a city level commitment. For World Environment Day, the United Nations has asked that we all take the Mask Challenge and join them to #BeatAirPollution.
Face masks are a great symbol to show leaders we all want to breathe clean air. Alongside celebrities, influencers and creators, the World Environment Day campaign invites everyone to decide what actions you are going to be taken to Beat Air Pollution.
Here are some examples of what we can do:
• Use public transport or car sharing, cycle or walk
• Switch to a hybrid or electric vehicle and request electric taxis
• Turn off the car engine when stationary
• Reduce your consumption of meat and dairy to help cut methane emissions
• Compost organic food items and recycle non-organic trash
• Switch to high-efficiency home heating systems and equipment
• Save energy: turn off lights and electronics when not in use
• Choose non-toxic paints and furnishings
Plant Trees With Us!
The United Nations has also asked that on World Environment Day, we can show how we have fulfilled our pledge by taking a photo or video of our self and posting it on social media. Use #WorldEnvironmentDay and #BeatAirPollution in your social media posts and don’t forget to tag @UNEnvironment.
Imagine if we took World Environment Day a step further and celebrated all month long! Green Spa Network is proud to announce the re-launch of the Action Initiative, the GSN Tree Planting Initiative, in partnership with WeForest, to mobilize the spa and wellness industry to plant 1 million trees. Thanks to the support of the vital community a total of 95,760 trees have been planted. This effort is premised on the critical and urgent need to regenerate the earth using trees natural abilities to reverse climate change.
• Organize or participate in a local tree planting event, and/or
• Continue an existing tree planting partnership.
