GSN Silver Sponsor, Universal Companies tells us about their social and eco-initiatives.
Harnessing energy from the sun for our office
We’ve installed 3 15-panel arrays totaling 10 kW at the east entrance of our headquarters plus a 4 kW solar panel awning along the south side, offsetting over 18,000 kW hours and 13.7 tons of CO2 annually.
Encouraging employee wellness
In addition to providing a walking trail and an organic garden for employees, we offer a wellness challenge twice a year, where participants engage in exercise competitions, learn about healthier eating habits, and attend informational presentations by various local health and wellness professionals. Participants are also provided with a Fitbit. Other ongoing wellness activities include disease management programs (e.g., diabetes, breast cancer awareness) and a monthly wellness newsletter.
We have recycle bins placed throughout the building, a baler in the warehouse, and e-cycling collection containers on the premises. But we know that recycling isn’t enough, so we close the loop by purchasing supplies made of recycled content when possible (e.g., 80% of our shipping boxes are now made with post-consumer recycled content). We also reuse packaging materials from vendor shipments and scan all return and receiving documents, which saves nearly a ream of paper per day.
One of the causes we support is breast cancer research, holding annual fundraisers and donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of The Pink Gloveto City of Hope. Local community outreach includes a winter coat drive, holiday toy collection, and food pantry donations.
Dock Coordinator, Warehouse
This is Super Dave. He isn’t wearing a cape in this photo, but we thought you should know about his latest feat: purchasing large metal bins and saving thousands of pounds of scrap metal from the landfill by taking it to be recycled, all on his own time. He’s our hero.
Photographer, Creative Development
Carrie is passionate about volunteerism and serves on our green team and charitable giving committee. But work isn’t the only place she lends a hand. Carrie has donated time working with those in need in Oaxaca, Mexico, and with refugees in Clarkston, Georgia in health clinics and teaching English as a second language.
Repair Service Technician, Warehouse
Tony was instrumental in obtaining a baler in the warehouse for our cardboard recycling, and he continues to ensure that cardboard is collected and placed in the baler for pick-up. Tony is interested in all things nature–gardening, viewing the night sky with his telescope, and feeding backyard birds.
Sustainability Specialist, Creative Development
When we need green claims verified, we ask Lisa. Her specialty is personal care ingredients, labeling, copywriting, and regulatory compliance. She serves on the advisory council and as co-chair of the Green Spa Network Personal Care Committee.
Director, Traffic/Receiving, Warehouse
Doug has implemented many eco-friendly changes to our warehouse, including switching out sodium vapor bulbs with CFLs, opting for an electric forklift instead of one that uses propane, choosing bubble wrap made with 25% recycled content, recycling pallets by giving them to other local businesses to utilize, and purchasing a printer that uses cartridge-free solid ink that features 30% bio-derived renewable material content.
